I’m probably not going to get much support with this question, but does anyone else think it would be better if Independence Day were celebrated on the first Sunday of July instead of randomly falling in the middle of the week as it does this year?
It just seems like a Sunday (or even Saturday) Independence Day would be easier to plan around. Yes, I realize that means Independence Day wouldn’t always fall on July 4, but that shouldn’t stop us from celebrating our country’s independence. What if the Monday after Independence Day were also declared a holiday, sort of like Memorial Day and Labor Day. Ahh, now you like the idea!
Regardless of the timing, the Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Grills, patriotism, fireworks … what’s not to love? And watermelon, too. No Fourth of July barbeque would be complete without it.
Speaking of watermelon, our first weekly prize in celebration of National Watermelon Month is a flash drive shaped like everyone’s favorite fruit (that’s it above). I agree,a holiday as big as 4th of July should be celebrated on the weekend! I think it would work..we are celebrating Independence Day not the 4th of July.

No, I don’t agree. The Fourth of July should be on the 4th of July. It doesn’t always fall mid-week. It’s great when it does fall on the weekend. It’s better when it’s on a Friday or Monday, that way it’s a 3 day weekend for mostly everyone.

Ya know, any holiday that falls smack dab in the middle of the week seems to be a double edge sword for us 9-5 working stiffs…two Mondays, (groan) and two Fridays! So I vote for all Federal holidays to fall on either a Monday or Friday so we can have three days off in a row. Gives us enought time to not only buy the watermelon, but create a fun carved image!
