SEED SPITTING CONTEST UPDATE: ENTERING THE HOME STRETCH

There are only a few weeks left until the big day. Of course, I’m talking about my first entry in an official watermelon seed spitting contest.

The contest, which I also have a hand in organizing, will take place at the Cumberland Ag Expo on September 5-7. Visitors to the expo will be able to visit the seed spitting contest booth between the hours of 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on each of the three days to give it their best shot. The longest distance in each of our four categories – men, women, youth, and children – will win a shiny first place medal and a gift certificate from the contest sponsor (a local ice cream shop).

I plan to compete on the final day, toward the end of the time period, just so I know what my goal distance is. All I need to decide now is what to wear (something athletic to go with my pre-spitting stretching routine would probably be good) and whether I’ll stick around to sign autographs after I win (yes).

My child is having a watermelon party this weekend and we want to
make watermelon tie-dye t-shirts. Do you know of any websites with instructions on how to make them? We also want to have a seed spitting contest. We are having a difficult time locating watermelons with seeds. Any idea where the best place to find seeded watermelons might be? Farmer’s markets? Any party ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks!

A watermelon party sounds awesome! I’ve always had good luck finding “how to” instructional videos on YouTube, so you might check there. As for tracking down watermelon WITH seeds, farmers markets are a good place to start, but your grocery store’s produce manager might also be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck!
