NATIONAL WATERMELON PRIZE #3: WATERMELON CARVING BOOK

July 29th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

For this month’s final prize, I had some different ideas bouncing around about what it should be. Then I started to think about July coming to a close and how half of the year is basically gone. The close of July usually marks the end of my favorite month, as July is National Watermelon Month. I don’t get too discouraged, though, as the next month is just as fun and just as watermelon-filled.

NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH PRIZE #2: WHERE WOULD YOU PUT THIS YARD DECORATION?

July 15th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

Earlier this year marked five years since we moved into our family home, so my wife and I are celebrated by building a small garden in the backyard. I’ll be honest, when my wife first mentioned the idea to me, I couldn’t help but think of the many hours of maintenance a garden requires. It seemed like a lofty idea at first, but after we laid out what we were going to plant, everything else just sort of fell into place.

In the early spring, she penned a list of seeds for me to pick up at the local hardware store. The list included tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, cauliflower and, of course, watermelon. When I arrived at the store, I was greeted by dozens of colorful, bright garden accessories that would add some much-needed personality to our garden. I couldn’t help but pause to consider shelves stocked with jovial garden gnomes and smiling tree frogs.l

When I turned the corner, I was eye-level with a giant, bug-eyed (no pun intended) black ant munching on a slice of watermelon ($34). I knew at that moment that I had to have it, whether my wife liked it or not (hopefully, she’s not reading this). I placed the ant in my cart, retrieved the seeds on my shopping list and rushed home to show her my awesome find.

At first, she gave me a look that said, “You’re kidding, right?” but after some persuading, we found the perfect spot for our friend — right by the watermelon patch! I like the ant so much, I’ve decided to give one away as our second National Watermelon Month prize. Leave a comment below for a chance to win your very own “ant eating watermelon” garden decoration!

HAPPY NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH! (HERE’S A PEEK AT WHAT’S IN STORE)

July 1st, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

unnamed

First thing’s first: Happy National Watermelon Month! I’ve waited 12 long months to type those words, and the day has finally arrived. Sure, it feels just like any other month — there’s watermelon in my fridge, and I can eat as much of it as I’d like — but July just feels different. It feels special, and it tastes special, too.

I’ve got a lot planned for the blog to help celebrate National Watermelon Month. There will be more prizes than usual — three to be exact. The first will be posted this Friday, and it’s one that I already have, so I can say with certainty that you’ll like it.

This month, I’ll also be writing one of the most fascinating blog entries that I’ve ever featured here on What About Watermelon. It’s about the legendary Bradford watermelon, a watermelon that was apparently so good and so sweet, that men sometimes died to get their hands on it. It’s true! Look for that entry next week, which will include a video that explains the legend.

I’ll be posting a few entries about watermelon carving, along with reminders to enter the 2015 Watermelon Carving Contest before the August 3 deadline. If you haven’t already entered, visit the official contest page for details and instructions.

So stay tuned, because it’s going to be a busy and fun month. Will I eat way more watermelon than I probably should? No, because you can never really eat too much watermelon, right?

HAPPY NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH (DON’T FORGET THE BAKED BEANS)

July 2nd, 2014 by The Watermelon Guy

It seems like just yesterday I was raking leaves and shoveling snow. And then I flip the page on my calendar, and it’s July. (And by “calendar,” I’m referring to the one on my smartphone.) Now I’m planning our annual camping trip and a visit to the local amusement park.

Not that I’m complaining. Far from it. By now, you all know that I’m a “summer person,” mainly because I’m an “outdoor person” and also because summer is unofficially “watermelon season.” July – for me, at least – is the centerpiece of summer, and it’s also National Watermelon Month. A whole month dedicated to the celebration of America’s favorite fruit? Count me in!

But let’s not forget the other foods being honored with a month-long party in July. It’s also National Baked Bean Month, and if you can’t have a backyard barbeque without watermelon, you certainly can’t forget the baked beans.

It’s National Hot Dog Month and National Grilling Month, too. Are you sensing a trend here? I am, and it’s delicious. And let’s not forget that July is also National Ice Cream Month. Oh yes, it’s becoming very easy to see why July is my favorite month of the year.

Despite the many excuses to gain 15 pounds this month, the focus on this blog, of course, will be on watermelon. To help with the tribute, I’ll be giving away a watermelon-themed prize each Friday this month. I might be spoiling the surprise, but the prizes will include a watermelon bag (this Friday), watermelon earrings, a battery-powered watermelon fan, and a prize that promises to be the highlight of your next barbeque with friends.

Stay tuned…it’s going to be a delicious 31 days!

HAPPY NATIONAL WATERMELON MONTH!

July 10th, 2009 by The Watermelon Guy

watermelon-pretty1It seems I got so caught up in all the 4th of July festivities and nice weather that I forgot to wish everyone a happy National Watermelon Month. Who knew July was National Watermelon Month? Not me until a few weeks ago, but I sure am glad I discovered that nugget of knowledge because it gives me the opportunity to eat watermelon morning, noon and night and have a good excuse for doing so. Not that I ever really needed an excuse to justify my behavior in the past, but you know what I mean.

I’m trying to think of a way to celebrate Watermelon Month, besides eating lots of watermelon (which I will do). If you have any ideas, let me know with a comment!

So get out there, grab some watermelon and enjoy July. If we end up having too much fun, I might petition the watermelon powers-that-be to make August National Watermelon Month too (although some people have already christened August as watermelon month).

Oh, one way you can celebrate is by finding a cool watermelon photo online and making it your computer desktop wallpaper to proudly proclaim your watermelon love to co-workers, friends and family members. If they say anything, just tell them it’s National Watermelon Month. I’m using the rather abstract photo found here. It looks sort of like a satellite image of planet Watermelon.
