IT’S FESTIVAL SEASON! THE 2015 WATERMELON FESTIVAL CALENDAR

May 12th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

I may have mentioned it before, but one of the drawbacks of being a watermelon lover in the Northeast is the distinct lack of watermelon festivals in my neck of the woods. Seriously, if you look at the 2015 festival calendar below, they’re pretty much all in the South!

I understand why, of course. Watermelon is grown primarily in the southern United States, and it has a longstanding history below the Mason-Dixon line. But there are plenty of watermelon lovers in the North, too, including yours truly. Maybe I’ll do my best to create a watermelon festival here in Pennsylvania next year. I can’t promise that it’ll be nearly as grand as something like the Luling Watermelon Thump, but every great festival has to start somewhere, right?

Below is a list of some of those notable watermelon festivals happening this year. As always, this list isn’t a complete listing of festivals. There are plenty of others happening around the United States, so if there’s a festival you’d like to see listed here, leave a comment, and I’ll add it!

Check out the “Festivals” page of the National Watermelon Promotion Board website for a much longer listing of watermelon festivals and watermelon days (50 events in all!). If you’re headed to a watermelon festival this year, send a few photos my way (watermelonexperts@gmail.com), and I’ll post them here on What About Watermelon.

MIKE ROWE: FUTURE WATERMELON SEED SPITTING CHAMP?

November 10th, 2014 by The Watermelon Guy

You may know Mike Rowe from his hit TV show, “Dirty Jobs.” These days, he’s the host of CNN’s “Somebody’s Gotta Do It,” a new show that brings viewers “face-to-face with men and women who march to the beat of a different drum.” CNN also calls it a show about “passion, purpose, and, occasionally, hobbies that get a little out of hand.”

In a recent episode, Mike paid a visit to the hallowed watermelon festival grounds of the Luling Watermelon Thump. While there, he stopped by the Luling Spitway, which hosts the annual World Seed Spitting Championship. It’s also where Lee Wheeler entered the Guinness Book of World Records by spitting a watermelon seed more than 68 feet in 1989.

Of course, Mike put his spittin’ skills to the test, and you can see the results in the video below. The video stops short of revealing his official distance (maybe you can catch the episode in reruns), but it was probably much further than my distance!

THE 2014 WATERMELON FESTIVAL CALENDAR (WHICH ONE WILL YOU ATTEND?)

April 17th, 2014 by The Watermelon Guy

picAnother spring and summer is upon us, which means it’s watermelon festival season. As I do every year, I’ve taken the liberty of assembling a short list of some of the more notable, watermelon-related festivals below.

If you’re headed to a watermelon festival this year, send a few photos my way (watermelonexperts@gmail.com) and I’ll post them here on What About Watermelon!

Truth be told, I’ve never actually been to a watermelon festival. It’s a shame, right? I mean, here I am, The Watermelon Guy, and I’ve never been to a festival devoted to watermelon. I blame it on geography. As you can see from the list below, most watermelon festivals take place in the south and, well, I’m not lucky enough to live in the South. I’ll get to one someday, though.
