March 7th, 2016 by The Watermelon Guy

Spring is all about renewal.

You can do a little spring cleaning around the house, you can plant flowers in the backyard to enjoy their sweet aromas, and you can finally put your winter jacket back in the closet until next year.

Here on What About Watermelon, we want to freshen up your spring with our March prize, the watermelon bath set you see below.

The prize consists of a three piece spa set for those who love to be pampered. This sponge set ($13) will pair perfectly with a bar of watermelon scented soap ($9). And what better way to relax in the bath tub than with a watermelon candle ($10)!

If you or someone you know would love this bath set, leave a comment on this post. I’ll choose one lucky commenter to win this awesome prize pack. As for the spring cleaning, that’s up to you, but I like to do mine on one whole day to get the not-so-fun stuff out of the way all at once.

FEBRUARY PRIZE: WATERMELON WATER BOTTLE

February 2nd, 2016 by The Watermelon Guy

Every January, I make two New Year’s resolutions — one for the Watermelon Guy here on the blog, and another for my own personal benefit. While the Watermelon Guy’s resolutions keep getting more and more interesting (this year’s will be to set a watermelon-related Guinness World Record), my personal goal usually stays uncomplicated. In fact, for the last few years, I’ve resolved to do something simple — to be healthier.

My goal isn’t necessarily weight loss (although a six-pack would be nice), but I want to change my eating habits to include healthier, more nutritious options. I know I’m not the only one who’s guilty of a late-night rendezvous with the cookie jar, but being more mindful of this will help me change my not-so-healthy habits.

This month, we’re giving away a prize that will help you in your quest to a healthier lifestyle, or just carry your favorite beverage. This Watermelon Water Bottle ($23 on Amazon) can hold 24-ounces of water, coffee or whatever you’d like! Leave a comment on this blog post with an update on your New Year’s resolution, and I’ll choose one comment at random as the winner!

JANUARY PRIZE: WHAT WOULD YOU PUT IN THIS BACKPACK?

January 5th, 2016 by The Watermelon Guy

Happy New Year, everyone! As I sit here in disbelief that it’s actually 2016, I’m slowly regaining consciousness from the week-long food coma I slipped into after Christmas. Four Christmas dinners and three holiday parties — just the memory of it is making me hungry for those sweet and spicy meatballs my Aunt Judith made.

Overall, Christmas in the Watermelon household was a success. On Christmas morning, my daughter rushed into our room at 6:30 a.m. to announce that it was, in fact, Christmas Day and Santa had come down our chimney with a mountain of presents. One of her favorite gifts from Santa was a new backpack decorated in true princess fashion, complete with blue bows and glittery straps.

This watermelon backpack ($45 on Amazon) may not be as cool as my five-year-old’s, but it’s still an amazing prize or gift for the watermelon lover in your life. Leave a comment with what you’d carry in this pack, and I’ll choose one comment at random as the winner!

GIFTS FOR THE WATERMELON LOVER: WATERMELON PILLOW

December 15th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

I’ll admit; I’m the kind of person who sleeps with no fewer than six pillows. It drives my wife crazy because she can’t get comfortable, which I don’t really understand because pillows are all about making you comfortable. I don’t know what drives the necessity, but I’ve been that way ever since I was a little boy. (Except for my Navy days, when one pillow was all I got.)

Even though she’s not crazy about my pillow addiction, my wife always sneaks one or two new pillows under the tree for me at Christmas. I’m usually not picky about what type of pillow it is (it doesn’t need to be one of those expensive goose down ones), but I did add the pillow you see above to my Christmas list this year.

The perfect combination of style and comfort, this Watermelon Plush Pillow ($14) is made for the watermelon lover in your life. Leave a comment below, and I’ll choose one comment at random to receive this little slice of comfort. Good luck!

GIFTS FOR THE WATERMELON LOVER: THREE OFFICE TREASURES

December 8th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

As someone who stares at three cubicle walls all day, I understand the importance of the photos, memos and keepsakes people keep at their desks. On my desk, I have a photo of my wife and I on our honeymoon in Hawaii (I still wear those ugly swim trunks from time to time), a tiny, plastic pony from my daughter’s third birthday party and a barrage of Post-It notes which also serve as a task calendar.

What you use to spice up your drab workspace actually says a lot about you. For instance, if you surround yourself with images of palm trees and white beaches, you might be yearning for an escape. If you’re like me, you keep a picture or themed-calendar to make you forget, even if just for a minute, about the mountain of paperwork sitting next to you.

If you need an escape without leaving the office, this week’s holiday watermelon prizes are just what you need. The first watermelon prize up for grabs is a Watermelon Mouse Pad ($12). The second is a watermelon notebook ($9), which means taking notes just got a whole lot sweeter. And if that doesn’t tempt you enough, check out this awesome watermelon flash memory drive ($15) with 16GB of memory (that’s enough for 8,000 pictures of watermelons)!

This week, I’ll choose THREE comments at random from all of the comments left on the blog this month and give you your choice of these three prizes. Good luck!

GIFTS FOR THE WATERMELON LOVER: WATERMELON HAT + MUG

December 2nd, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

I really try to like each season equally, but that’s hard to do when there’s snow whipping around in the single-digit wind outside my window. I actually don’t mind the snow, especially now that I have a five-year-old who loves to build snowmen. What I find most disagreeable about winter is the piercing cold. Once the temperature drops to a certain level (usually when I can count the degrees on one frozen hand), I wisely avoid going outside unless I absolutely have to.

This month, to help celebrate the upcoming holiday, I’ll feature a prize every week here on What About Watermelon, including some (like today’s) designed to protect you from the frightful weather the season may bring.

For example, this handmade, crocheted Watermelon Hat ($15) will not only keep your head warm, but it will turn heads anywhere you go!

You can also step up your hot chocolate game with this cool Watermelon Tumbler ($15). Good for both hot and cold drinks, this double-walled mug will keep your drinks at the right temperature for hours.

Leave a comment with your favorite (or least favorite) part of winter to be entered to win these gifts. I’ll choose one comment at random from all of the comments left on the blog this month to receive BOTH prizes. And, as always, stay tuned for more awesome prizes to come in December.

NOVEMBER PRIZE: WATERMELON COFFEE MUG

November 3rd, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

As my wife will attest, I am addicted to coffee. I usually have two cups before I even leave the house in the morning and several throughout the work day. You might think I’m crazy, but it’s the only way I get through the day without being incredibly zombie-fied.

Hopefully, this month’s prize will go to someone who enjoys drinking coffee or tea as much as I do! This Watermelon Coffee Mug ($20 on Amazon) will make an awesome addition to your kitchen cupboard, regardless of what you sip from it. One lucky commenter on this post will soon be sipping in style.

Speaking of winners, I’m excited to announce that Catalina is the winner of the Halloween Carving Contest. She spooked the competition with the Nightmare Before Christmas-inspired carving below and was spooky enough to take home a $25 gift card. Congratulations to Catalina and thanks to everyone who submitted their carving!

OCTOBER PRIZE: WATERMELON WELCOME MAT

October 2nd, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

One thing I remember most from my childhood is the many weekends spent away at Grandma’s house. As most kids my age moaned and groaned about having to visit their relatives, I found much joy in it. Grandma always had the best candy and cookies, and my Grandpa always seemed to find quarters behind my ear.

22

But my favorite thing about Grandma’s house — which, I admit, sounds kind of silly — were the decorative welcome mats she would lay on the front porch. Every month, Grandma would swap the mat with another, which usually had “punny” jokes and short, inspirational quotes. She had a bit of funny bone, which may explain where I get my humor.

This month’s prize is inspired by my grandma’s fun-loving, welcoming attitude and everyone out there just like her. The watermelon doormat you see above ($40 online) will look perfect on any watermelon-lover’s doorstep. I know this because I bought one for myself last year. I loved it so much that I actually stepped over it for the first six months so I wouldn’t tarnish it with my dirty shoes.

Leave a comment on this post, and I’ll choose one at random to win one of these watermelon welcome mats — and you can find out for yourself if you’d be as protective of your mat as I was!

SEPTEMBER PRIZE: WATERMELON POP-OUT CUTTER

September 3rd, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

1September is typically when summer comes to a close. While I refuse to let summer die until I’m standing in six
inches of freezing snow, I can see why people consider it to be summer’s last hoorah. It’s the dreaded time when kids go back to school (or the much-anticipated time, if you’re a busy parent), the fresh summer breeze turns to crisp autumn air, and the watermelons are replaced by pumpkins in the produce bins.

However, if you’re like me, you’ll keep summer alive all year round with this awesome pop-out cutter ($12), designed by Avihai Shurin for online retailer, Monkey Business. It looks like a cookie cutter – which I guess you could use it for – but instead of cookie dough, you use the cutter to form hand-held pops made out of watermelon!

Leave a comment on this blog post about what you’ll miss most about summer, and I’ll choose one at random as the winner of this pop-out cutter.

AUGUST PRIZE: WOULD YOU TAKE A DIP WITH THIS WATERMELON RAFT?

August 5th, 2015 by The Watermelon Guy

22

There are so many things I love about summer. The weather is beautiful, the watermelons are plentiful, and everyone seems to be in summer mode.

One of my favorite summer rituals is opening the pool. I love peeling back the pool cover and seeing the water below (even if it’s green and leafy).

I can’t wait to fish the leaves out of the water and make it blue again so I can take a refreshing dip. My wife calls me a fish for how much time I spend in the water, but, growing up, I only had the community pool, where my friends and I were regulars from sun up to sun down. Now that I have one right in my backyard, I take full advantage of it.

This month’s prize will go to someone who loves spending time in the water like I do. The awesome inflatable raft above (Amazon – $64) would look great poolside or floating down the creek. Leave a comment on this blog post for your chance to win!
