FEATURED PRODUCT AND JULY PRIZE: THE WATERMELON CANDLE

Behold the watermelon candle. I actually smelled this candle not long ago in a store. It smelled the way I imagine a giant watermelon patch in Georgia might smell right before the harvest. Of course, watermelon patches probably don’t smell anything like this candle. They probably smell like wet dirt and fertilizer, but who wants a candle that smells like wet dirt and fertilizer?

Like most food-scented candles, it made me wish I had a spoon so I could scoop some up and see if it tasted just as good. Maybe spread it on toast or something. But enough about my weird sensory impulses. (Although, in my defense, the website does describe the candle as “so life-like, it makes you almost want to take a bite.”)

I’ll send one of these mouth-watering candles to one commenter chosen at random this month. Please don’t try eating it. I was only kidding about that… sort of.

  • Hi watermelon guy. glad to see the blog up and running. I have one questions for now. Is July National Watermelon Month? I ask because I have a blog called Months of Edible Celebrations where I celebrate reasons to celebrate food! I am planning a post for National Watermelon Month but have come across a few discrepancies. Some say July, some say August.
I would LOVE to know for sure when it is…Thanks so much for your time,
    Louise

  • You’re right, Louise. Some sources designate August as National Watermelon Month and some say July. I side with July because that’s the official word from the National Watermelon Association. July 2007 was designated as National Watermelon Month by the U.S. House of Representatives and if they say it’s National Watermelon Month, it must be National Watermelon Month.

Of course, I’m not sure if that resolution only pertained to July of 2007 or if it was meant to apply to every July thereafter. If there’s still some confusion about July or August, we can always just celebrate watermelon in both months and have twice the fun!

  • I really enjoy reading your blog … Who doesn’t like watermelon ?!
It’s as much a part of summer as hot dogs, s’mores & ice tea ! Summer without watermelon is like Christmas without presents !
    Have A Great Summer !

  • I just bought the absolute biggest watermelon I have ever bought. I have filled all the containers I own with the contents of this watermelon, and STILL THERE IS MORE WATERMELON. Sad thing is, I can’t eat any of it! I’m allergic to fresh fruits and veggies! I came across watermelon.org when looking for something to do for my husband with all this lovely watermelon, and found the link to this little blog. Fun!

  • I agree, Kim. Summer without watermelon really is like Christmas without presents. Imagine having watermelon at Christmas along with all those presents. I do exactly that. For me, watermelon is a year round treat!
Christie, Christie, Christie…all that watermelon is a great problem to have. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but don’t forget to swing by the recipes section of Watermelon.org (link below). There are more than enough suggestions on there to use up your watermelon.

  • My family went to the store yesterday, and my husband and myself both ended up getting a watermelon. His was darker green on the outside than mine. This morning my youngest son accidently dropped the darker one. I was in another room, and my kids come tell me that it’s yellow inside and that dad was throwing it away. I quickly jumped on the computer and found your web site. We caught my husband in time and are now enjoying eating it. It does have a sweeter taste, and can even taste a bit of honey. Thanks for all you info on here.
