WATERMELON IS NUMBER ONE ON LIST OF BUDGET-FRIENDLY FRUITS

While almost all fruits and vegetables are delicious (notice I said “almost all”), not all fruits and veggies are created equal when it comes to the cost per serving. A recent article in the Produce Marketing Association’s (PMA) Fresh Magazine shed some light on which produce packs more punch for your pennies.

According to the article: “In order to provide greater clarity on the true cost per serving for fruits and vegetables, the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) commissioned the Perishables Group to conduct a study using its national supermarket fresh foods database. The goal: determine the lowest average cost at any given time during the year for a consumer to meet dietary recommendations by purchasing nine servings of fresh fruits and vegetables per day.”

And so, the Perishables Group (which sounds like a collection of food-friendly crime fighting superheroes) spent weeks upon weeks analyzing mountains of grocery store data. What they found was great news for watermelon lovers. Turns out, watermelon is the least expensive fruit per serving in the produce aisle!

A chart outlining the Perishables Group’s findings is on the right. As you can see, watermelon and its good friend the banana are head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to being budget-friendly. Granted, we’re not in cabbage and potato territory yet, but really, who is?
