SPOT THE FAKE WATERMELON NEWS

Sometimes I come across news that seems too weird to be true. Like the time I read in our local newspaper about my uncle Marcus getting married and I thought to myself, “There’s no way any woman would marry him! This news has to be fake!” It wasn’t fake. He got married later that year to a very nice woman from Tulsa.

Similarly, I recently found an unbelievable watermelon story and paired it with a fake news story below. Take a look at both news bites and leave a comment with your best guess as to which blurb is the phony.

1. A VERY GOOD WATERMELON – When a 64-year-old grandmother in Van Nuys, CA, was awakened one day by the sound a burglar entering her home, she grabbed the nearest weapon she could find – a watermelon. The recently retired nurse spotted the distracted robber in her living room and hurled the 15-pound fruit at his head. The juicy impact left him dazed long enough for her to escape and call police.

2. A VERY BAD WATERMELON – A group of thieves in Colombia entered a drugstore, subdued a guard, and stole an ATM machine, using watermelon rinds placed underneath to slide the heavy cash dispenser out the door. Police have arrested seven of the 10 burglars, who managed to withdraw 60 million pesos from the machine (about $30,000). According to local police, this is the second time an ATM has been stolen using watermelon rinds as a getaway tactic.
