VINTAGE PHOTO: AT THE MARKET

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from old photos, it’s that people used to buy all of their produce off the backs of wagons that drove into town each day. Today’s vintage watermelon photo is proof. See the woman in the hat on the right? She’s got her watermelon along with, I’m assuming, a basket full of freshly laid eggs. The bucket is empty, but not for long. She’s stopping at the local farm on the way home to milk a cow.

And how about those vintage prices? I don’t know how much the watermelons are selling for, but the notice in the window of the restaurant advertises hamburgers for only five cents. That’s right, five cents! If I lived in a world in which hamburgers only cost a nickel (six-and-a-half cents for a cheeseburger) and the watermelon man drove his cart down Main Street every day, I’d be a very happy man.
