I don\u2019t remember much about high school \u2013 another sign of old age, I guess \u2013 but I do remember the lunches. Pizza was always my favorite school lunch option. It was never great pizza (I wouldn\u2019t even call it \u201cgood\u201d), and the rectangular shape always confused me, but it was pizza, and when you\u2019re a teenager, that\u2019s all you really need.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, teenagers also need a bunch of fruits and vegetables every day. I recently read in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/45306416\/ns\/health-diet_and_nutrition\/t\/pizza-vegetable-congress-says-yes\/#.Tt45V1aa9NE\">an article<\/a> that Congress is attempting to classify school pizza as a vegetable. More specifically, they\u2019re trying to count the thin layer of tomato paste on school pizza a serving of vegetables. The USDA disagrees with Congress\u2019s nutritional reasoning, which has created a bit of a food fight between the two groups.<\/p>\n<p>As of this morning, neither side had reached out to me to get The Watermelon Guy\u2019s input on the issue. This oversight on their part is a shame because I\u2019ve got the perfect solution: Get rid of the old school lunchroom pizza and replace it with watermelon pizza. That\u2019s right, watermelon pizza.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.whataboutwatermelon.com\/index.php\/2011\/12\/coming-soon-to-school-lunchrooms-nationwide-watermelon-pizza\/photo-13\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2110\" title=\"photo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whataboutwatermelon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/photo9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"249\" \/><\/span>There\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watermelon.org\/Recipes\/Kids-Watermelon-Pizza-Supreme-162.aspx\">recipe for watermelon pizza<\/a> on the National Watermelon Promotion Board website. I think it\u2019s a viable alternative to traditional pizza for three main reasons:<\/p>\n<p>1. It\u2019s a healthy option loaded with vitamins and nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>2. It qualifies as a serving of fruit (thanks to the toppings) <em>and <\/em>as a vegetable (because that\u2019s what watermelon technically is).<\/p>\n<p>3. It looks a lot more like pizza than the current lunchroom pizza.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve forwarded a link to this blog entry to my congressman, the USDA, <em>and <\/em>my high school\u2019s head lunch lady, Helen.
