In the spirit of this month\u2019s poll (sound off on the right if you haven\u2019t already), I\u2019ve decided to repost this insightful entry. Enjoy!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span>In many ways, a watermelon is a lot like a Christmas gift: You\u2019re pretty sure you\u2019re going to like what\u2019s inside, but you\u2019re never really sure until you open it. Unlike with a Christmas gift, however, you\u2019ll like what\u2019s inside 100 percent of the time with a watermelon. (I\u2019m at about 75 percent with Christmas gifts<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Since you can\u2019t stealthily peel back the wrapping of a watermelon in the grocery store to sneak a peek at what\u2019s inside, you\u2019ll have to employ some different techniques to determine its \u201cripeness.\u201d Personally, I use the following three-step process to find the right watermelon, and I have to say, it hasn\u2019t failed me yet!<\/p>\n

1. LOOK \u2013 Your watermelon should be firm, symmetrical and free of major bruises or scars. Some minor scratches are okay, however. After all, the purpose of that thick rind is to protect the delicious contents inside. The outer rinds of ripe watermelons should also be dark green in color.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. LIFT \u2013 The ripest watermelons have the most water. And since watermelons are 92 percent water, your watermelon should be relatively heavy for its size.<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. TURN \u2013 Turn your watermelon over and check out its bottom, which should have a creamy yellow spot (also called \u201cthe ground spot\u201d and seen in the image above). This is where the watermelon rested on the ground while it soaked up the sun on the farm. If this spot is white or greenish, your watermelon may have been picked too soon and might not be as ripe as it should be.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now I know what a lot of you are thinking: \u201cWhat about the sound test? You know, knocking, tapping, drumming or thumping on the watermelon to test its ripeness?\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s my stance on using your watermelon as a bongo drum in the produce aisle: While it\u2019s true that the so-called \u201csound test\u201d can give you some insight into a watermelon\u2019s ripeness, I don\u2019t endorse or use this method because it\u2019s too subjective and there\u2019s no definitive agreement on exactly what result the test is supposed to yield.<\/p>\n

Some say a ripe watermelon will produce a hollow sound, while a \u201cthick\u201d or \u201csolid\u201d sound indicates a watermelon that\u2019s either not ripe or too ripe. Others say a hollow or \u201ctight\u201d sound is bad, and your watermelon should instead sound \u201cfirm.\u201d Still others say a ripe watermelon should produce a B-flat pitch. (What?!)<\/p>\n

In other words, you can tap-tap-tap all you want, but if you perform the three-part test we talked about earlier, you should have no problem finding a great watermelon.
