DID YOU KNOW: THE MANY USES OF WATERMELON

I was browsing the “Kids” section of the National Watermelon Promotion Board website the other day (hey, why not?) and I stumbled across an interesting fact. Apparently, early explorers used hollowed-out watermelons as canteens to hold water while they were trekking across untamed lands in pursuit of whatever it is they were searching for.

It makes sense, really. Watermelons are, after all, 92 percent water. I could find no reference to any details about the practice or if they used the watermelon to hold other types of drinks. A refreshing sports drink would have been nice, I imagine. Maybe a mixed drink of some sort for later on around the camp fire. Or some coffee for the morning. The world may never know.

  • Actually, I’m not sure where that came from. It was just a photo I found online. But now that you mention it, it would VERY cool and relatively simple to fill a watermelon with a beverage for a party and attach a spigot to dispense drinks! I might try that and report the results here on the blog.
