ASK THE EXPERTS: WHERE CAN I FIND WATERMELON WITH SEEDS?

MATTHEW L. OF INDIANAPOLIS, IN ASKS: Where can I get seeded watermelon? I would like to have them shipped to me or I’ll pick them up.

I hear you loud and clear, Matthew. It seems like all you can find these days are seedless watermelons, but every now and then, for old time’s sake, it would be nice to have one with seeds, right?

While the seedless and mini varieties have taken over in popularity and demand, there certainly are still many folks who grow and sell the seeded watermelons, oblong in shape, chock full of black seeds. I get a lot of comments from people who remember the long, sweet watermelons of their youth and do not think that the seedless varieties are as good, but there is no science that supports the notion that a seeded watermelon is sweeter than a seedless.

If you really have a yearning for seeded watermelons, there are two things you can do: 1) check your local farmers’ markets and 2) talk to your local produce manager at your grocery store. He can take the request up to the store’s buyers. If a buyer believes that his customers will buy a seeded watermelon, he’ll be more apt to supply for the store. If he won’t stock
seeded watermelon (which isn’t likely), ask him if he knows where you might find some.

Hope this helps,

    • yes I agree. I do not want to eat seedless watermelon treat with gout medication - this is unnatural.

    • AGREED! Science doesn't have tastes buds, or texture "feelers". The seedless are pink, rubbery, and flavorless. The seeded are rich, sweet, flavorful, red, and feel like a million little watermelon water balloon popping in your mouth. There is a definite delineation between the fruit and the rind. AND ... for those of you who spit the seeds out? You are throwing away part of the sweetest treat of the watermelon. They are delicious! I feel like I'm really getting ripped off if the seeds are missing!

  • Seeded watermelon has a crunchie
Texture. I can't stand the "seedless" watermelon. Its not a mind thing its a taste thing. Everyone I have talked to about it says the same. Sometimes you will see the watermelon man along the side of the road here on long island with those crunchy juicy sweet watermelons from North Carolina.

    • these little "boutique organic" farms are too expensive, for just VEGETABLES--REALLY SICK OF HIPPIE ORGANIC FARMS AND EXPENSIVE FARMERS' MARKETS.

  • Watermelon wine is better with a seeded watermelon that with a seedless as well. I know it isn't scientific, but it seems to be a consensus among wine makers.

  • I think they seem less sweet today is because of the supply chain. Most fruit is picked so early nowdays. If you want great watermelons or fruit for that matter go to your local farmers market.

  • The only science I need to support the notion that a seeded watermelon tastes better than seedless is trusting my own taste buds and exclaiming "oh this watermelon is so good. The response I have from eating a seedless is always the same: Meh. Furthermore I've never eaten a seedless and been reminded of 4th of July as a kid, yet a seeded watermelon can magically transport me back there and it isn't because I can spit the seeds 15 feet across the room, although that is a nice bonus.

    • The seedless watermelon is almost tasteless. In this article it states there is no scientific fact to prove that. We have our taste buds for that so screw the scientific facts !

  • It's not about 'sweetness',… it's about the 'nutritive balance, the x-factor balance',…. seedless lacks the x-factor. With my body, I get the sense of more nutritiveness from watermelons with seeds and grapes with seeds, even if I don't eat the seeds. It feels/seems as though that the seeds impart more nutrition in the flesh, by their development.

    • Of course it's "about the sweetness" also – H E L L O., and let's not forget the flavor.

  • For me it’s about the sweetness and nutritional value and both are missing in seedless watermelons. I’d even say that seedless are missing probiotics that are normally found in the seeded. There’s just a huge difference all around.

  • The omniscient and omnipotent Creator made them bearing seeds after their own kind. Anyone who conceitly believes omnipotence or omniscience leaves room for improvement should consider their finite definitions.
