Most of you – if not all of you – probably guessed based on the timing of last week’s entry about the ginormous Australian watermelons that the story was a not-so-elaborate April Fool’s joke. I tried to make it believable with reports about Tasmania’s wet climate (which is true) and the power of kangaroo manure as a fertilizer (which might be true), but anyone who knows that region’s weather will tell you that the relatively cool Tasmanian summers aren’t enough to produce record-breaking watermelons.
The fact that there are no 847-pound watermelons growing in Tasmania is good news for Lloyd Bright, who owns the current “world’s largest watermelon” record with a 268-pound beauty harvested in 2005 (that’s it below). Don’t worry, Bright family, your record is safe … for now.
