augustpollentrywatermelonYou all know by now that I eat a lot of watermelon. I don’t have watermelon in my fridge ALL the time, but it’s there a lot (I have a chunk in there now that won’t be there later tonight). Some people eat watermelon at least once a week, others are once a month fans, and others, well, they’re lucky to get a slice once or twice a year. (How do you live like that?!)

Which brings me to my August poll question: When’s the last time you ate watermelon? Feel free to weigh in with your answer on the right. For me, I only have to look at my watch to figure that one out.

By the way, Happy National Watermelon Day! According to some sources, today is the best day of the year (if you’re a watermelon lover).

gallagherEveryone knows who Gallagher is, right? He’s the shaggy- haired guy who created a stand-up comedy routine in the ‘80s centered around smashing watermelons to bits using his signature Sledge-O-Matic. Even as a child, I always wondered: Was his destruction of poor, innocent watermelons good for the watermelon industry or bad? I was never sure, but he did always make me hungry for watermelon, so I guess that sort of answers that question.

To be fair, Gallagher used the Sledge-O-Matic to wreak destruction on plenty of other food items too. Cottage cheese, gallons of milk, hamburgers. None fared too well, but it was always the watermelon that bore the brunt of his frustrations. I mean, what sort of emotionally scarring childhood experience did this man have with a watermelon that caused him to lash out so dramatically years later? I’ll bet Freud would have some pretty cool theories.

Anyhow, I’ll admit that I found his routines fascinating and funny and that this month’s poll question is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I’d like to know what you think:

Gallagher and his Sledge-O-Matic: Crime against watermelon or all in good fun?

Sound off with a vote on the right and with a comment below. And for those of you with strong stomachs who don’t mind a little gore, here’s a video of the G-Man massacring a few watermelons. I started to watch it, but I couldn’t get past the first 60 seconds.

Last month, I asked during which time of the year you usually purchase your watermelon. Most of you answered that you’re mainly a spring and summer type of watermelon eater. A few, like me, are four-season eaters. If there were a fifth season, somewhere between the end of winter and the beginning of spring (because there really should be), I’d probably eat it then, too.

watermelon_simpleTo be honest, it’s not surprising that spring and summer are the most popular watermelon seasons. Most people only buy watermelon in the warmer months, but I’m going to make it my personal mission to convince you to give watermelon a shot during the fall and winter too! Hopefully, if I ask that question again next year, the response will be a little different. (Don’t make me show up at your door in November with watermelon muffins.)

This month, I’m curious to learn not when you eat your watermelon, but how you eat your watermelon. Are you an old-fashioned type of person (one slice at a time)? Are you an on-the-go or lunch-at-work eater (cubed in a container)? Or are you adventurous like me and use watermelon as an ingredient in all sorts of recipes? Feel free to select as many answers as you need to on the poll at right.
