OCTOBER POLL: 12 MONTHS OF WATERMELON

I’ve talked in the past about how more people are eating watermelon year round. That’s right, it’s not just a summertime snack anymore. But there are still a lot of people who, for one reason or another, will only touch a watermelon if the temperature outside is above 80 degrees.

To me, that makes no sense.

Why can’t watermelon be enjoyed during the fall and winter months? You enjoy ice cream in December, don’t you? A tall glass of iced tea still tastes good when there’s snow on the ground, doesn’t it? And you don’t retire your sunglasses just because it’s freezing outside, right? Okay, that last argument is more about fashion and avoiding the glare of the sun, but you get the idea.

My point is, if you can find watermelon on sale year round, you should eat watermelon year round. I know the first part – finding it on sale – can be challenging, but if you don’t look, you’ll never find it!

Which leads us to this month’s What About Watermelon poll: Do you plan to eat watermelon in the fall and winter? Go ahead and weigh in on the right. And be honest… you won’t hurt my feelings.

I eat at least a half watermelon daily. I just asked my husband if there was any way we could get them year round. I will surely have DT’s when they are no longer in the grocery stores

We know a bunch of folks who eat it all year round. I know I do. But I tend to eat slices of chilled watermelon in the summer. While in the winter, I tend do eat more things like watermelon salsa, and salads with watermelon in them. I guess I like to spice up the melon in the winter. In the summer, I’m a purist.

Does anyone know where you can buy watermelon in the winter? It is the only thing my 8 yr old son asked to receive for Christmas. We live in North Carolina so none are grown around here right now.
    thanks!

I have tried so many times to get water melon off season BUT ITS nasty tasting.. in fact the watermelons I have been getting past few years have been pretty gross, I think one out of ten have been worth raving about.. I get some with star looking sharp dried inside its so weird.. I got to the point I make the produce guy cut one in half for me to ensure its good.. but now I see it maybe pretty germy!!! OH my gosh love to get back to the days of GREAT WATERMELON I can eat half a watermelon a day myself.. but cant find any worth eating!!! UGH

I’m using my food dehydrator to make lots of dried watermelon jerky chips to eat this winter. Simple dried watermelon chips are quite good, but sweet and sour watermelon jerky chips are amazing.

I only eat it in the summer because it’s so cooling. It would be too cooling for me in winter. In winter I am more attracted to winter fruits.

I believe one should eat seasonal fruits and vegetables, after all nature has produced it in such manner. Watermelon is a fruit of summer season as it keeps your system cool in summers. I am sure you dont want your body’s inner system to be cold in winters!!

I NEED watermelon year-round. My husband and I eat about 5 large watermelon per week. It is a major part of our diet. We’ve been having a hard time finding good watermelon year-round. We’ve been finding that the watermelon during off season is not sweet and the meat part of it is very, very hard. It’s very disappointing how a lot of stores will sell it year-round but it’s no good. It is terrible compared to how the watermelon is during in season. If I had a supplier I would order weekly. We had weight loss surgery and our lives depend on it.
