Not long ago, I brought a watermelon (of course) to a barbecue at my brother-in-law’s house. Soon after I got there, I began to carve it up but soon realized my brother-in-law had nothing to serve the watermelon wedges on aside from an old cookie sheet.
Don’t get me wrong. You can serve me watermelon on a rusty garbage can lid and I’d probably eat it (I’m 99 percent sure I would), but it was one of those “party barbecues,” and a little presentation goes a long way at those things. If my brother-in-law had this month’s prize – the watermelon platter (or any platter) – the watermelon would have been presented nicely and received the adoration it deserved. Not that people didn’t adore the watermelon. It was gone in about 12 minutes, but still…
