I need your help. I’ve spent the last two weeks trying to come up with some good watermelon-related New Year’s resolutions and so far, all I’ve come up with is “eat more watermelon.” It’s pretty much a given that I’ll do that in 2013, so I don’t need to make a resolution to motivate myself.
You may remember last year, I made one resolution – to enter a watermelon seed-spitting contest. I’m happy to report that not only did I enter a contest, but I also helped organize it. And although I didn’t win, it was a fun experience that I can finally check off my life’s to-do list.
But what should I do in 2013? Should I make several small watermelon resolutions or one big one? That’s where you come in. Leave a comment below with some watermelon-related ideas for things I should do next year. If I choose your idea and accomplish it, I’ll send you a special prize. I’m not sure what that prize will be, but it’ll be darn special, that’s for sure.
Eat seeded watermelon ( save the seeds to spit or roast)
Try to find a yellow fleshed or orange fleshed watermelon. then compare taste to red fleshed using the tried and true blindfold test. You will be surprised at the results.
This summer, buy the largest watermelon you can find, and the smallest mini. Go to a hobby store and by parts to make yourself a radio controlled watermelon cruise ship with a lifeboat in tow ( mini melon). You will need a good size pool to test the seaworthiness of the craft before venturing out to the high seas. ( hint: cut the watermelon in half and scoop out and eat the flesh first. Save the other half for a second boat in case your first one sinks or your friends want a boat to race with you.
Start collecting recipes with watermelon as an ingredient. Let visitors to your website view these recipes whenever. You could kick start the collection by asking your readers for recipes or by having a contest. This website could then have traffic for people who are looking for something to do with that 10 pound watermelon besides slice it.
Mark – I’d love to try all three of those things! I’ll definitely give the blind taste test a try and report the results in a blog entry. The radio controlled watermelon ship sound fun too. I used to enjoy flying RC airplanes … I wonder if I can make a watermelon fly!
