HALLOWEEN RECIPE: WATERMELON FANGS

You’ll be seeing a lot of Halloween-themed entries here on What About Watermelon this month. I’ll post entries about the best and worst watermelon costumes, why people carve pumpkins and not watermelon for Halloween, and I’ll even teach you how to make a cool watermelon brain for your party.

Both of this month’s featured recipe entries will focus on Halloween, too – starting with this one for “Watermelon Fangs.” If you’re throwing a Halloween party or attending one, these toothy little appetizers would be a nice addition to the refreshment table.

The recipe calls for desiccated coconut (dried coconut flakes) to make the white teeth. That’ll probably work, but I’m willing to bet you can find some sort of white frosting that you can dip the teeth into for a brighter, whiter vampire smile. Maybe you could even add some drops of red food coloring blood to some of the fangs to complete the look. I’ll leave that detail up to you, but in my opinion, fangs without blood are just pointy teeth. Or the sign of a lazy vampire.

WATERMELON FANGS

INGREDIENTS

  • Watermelon
  • ¼ cup desiccated coconut

DIRECTIONS:

Wipe rind of watermelon to remove any dirt. Cut watermelon into 16 slices. Use a small knife to cut a zigzag pattern of fangs into each piece of melon. Arrange melon pieces into 8 “mouths” and sprinkle the pointy bits with coconut to make the white fangs.

By the way, I’ll be making this recipe (with the white frosting teeth) and the watermelon brain featured next week for a Halloween party later this month. I’ll take pictures and post my creations on October 31. If anyone else makes this recipe, take a picture and I’ll post it along with mine.
